Small-scale Irrigation
Introduce small-scale irrigation for marketable horticultural cash crop development along the lowlands following Assabol Reservoir is critical. Alongside the urbanization project and TVET College manpower development project above, this will create opportunity for Irob youth who are resettled in Dawhan and Alitena towns. Assabol reservoir built by Adigrat Catholic Diocese needs to be managed properly and utilized efficiently to make this project a reality.
The target areas highlighted in green are Sangade, Daya, Kallasáa, Dawhan, Gibidawo & Alitena villages (Bruno Strebel). By managing and maximizing the utilization of this this resource, and many smaller dams throughout Irobland, it would be possible to achieve the transformation of small-scale irrigation agriculture along riverbanks and lowland plains sketched as green above. By doing so, we could boost production per area for annual marketable vegetables and fruit crops. This would guarantee employment and income generation for Irob youth by marketing their products in regional markets like Adigrat, Zalambessa and Sanafe.
